Tomorrow, Tuesday, December 12th, the Community Board 7 Transportation Committee will be having a discussion of "e-bike safety," and it's vitally important they hear diverse voices like yours speak in favor of comprehensive solutions over reactionary and reductive fear-based policies.
There's no doubt the growing number of e-bikes and electric mopeds on our streets is contributing to conditions that make some people feel unsafe. Regardless of what the data say, that perception of danger is real. The question is, what should be done to address it?
We'll be on-hand to present an overview of our e-micromobility policy platform that offers a forward-looking approach to addressing the e-bike boom. We're scheduled to present after the committee hears from "E-Vehicle Safety Alliance," a group that describes themselves as "victims and potential victims of e-vehicle crashes." EVSA has a punitive mission focused almost exclusively on restricting the use of e-bikes. We don't think that's the answer.
Everyone wants and deserves safe streets, but we believe well-designed infrastructure and considered, care-based policy is the way to get there; not stoking fear at a narrow group of stakeholders. I hope you can join us to raise your voice in support of taking a thoughtful approach to this complex problem.
