Our Council Member in District 7, Shaun Abreu, recently became a co-sponsor of legislation in the City Council that would require the NYC Department of Transportation to set up a licensing system for all e-bikes and other electric micromobility devices, regardless of type.
In addition to being bad policy, this bill would do nothing to increase safety for the people sharing our streets. We know people-first infrastructure improves safety for all street users, not bureaucratically burdensome legislation that relies on arbitrary enforcement.
Neighboring District 6 Council Member Gale Brewer has already taken a stand against this legislation, saying “I do not believe a blanket e-bike registration rule will make streets safer, nor is NYC DOT equipped to establish, manage, or enforce it.”
Click here or on the button below to send a letter to CM Abreu directly to urge him to withdraw his support for this bad bill and instead focus on improving infrastructure in District 7 that would make the streets safer, and more equitable, for everyone.
