This May 1st—May Day—we celebrate not only the spirit of renewal and collective action, but also the people who make our city’s streets and public spaces more welcoming, vibrant, and joyful. I’m excited to invite you to the 2025 Public Space Awards at Brooklyn Winery in Williamsburg. This year, we’re honoring seven incredible leaders and organizations whose work embodies the power of public space activism and stewardship: -
I.S. 528 Bea Fuller Rodgers School in Washington Heights, for creating an inspiring example of how students thrive when given the public space to do so.
- Christine Berthet, a living legend in street safety activism and the recipient of this year’s City Visionary Award.

Avenue C Plaza, a collaborative, community-led anchor for Brooklyn’s Kensington neighborhood that brings creativity and care into the public realm.

Rosa Chang, who has worked to reinvigorate the spaces at the Brooklyn Bridge, advocating for Gotham Park and harnessing the promise of a truly connected downtown and Chinatown.

The Sunset Park Business Improvement District, Downtown Jamaica Partnership, and 31st Avenue Open Street Collective, nominees for this year’s Public Space Activator Award. Their dedicated neighborhood-level stewardship provides street care, public art, programming, and vital business support to foster an enlivened street culture for both residents and visitors alike.
