Open Plans: Transforming the streets of NYC to be truly livable

This sweeper already handles the cleaning. One bill gives it the power to handle parking too.

Dear [first-name],

Today marks a big day in the push for better parking enforcement: the City Council just passed a “Home Rule” resolution calling on Albany to pass a bill that would allow automated enforcement on streetsweepers.

You know the drill: too often people leave their cars stored at the curb for days and weeks on end, meaning the street never gets cleaned. Enforcement is lax so they’re willing to risk that they won’t get a ticket. This bill would put cameras on streetsweepers so that they can issue tickets to cars that are parked illegally. Cleaner streets, guaranteed.

But a City Council Home Rule resolution is just the first step: now we need Albany to act.

Call your representatives in Albany and tell them you want automated enforcement (S1891/A4523) to pass this session! Find and call your reps with this tool below.

CALL YOUR STATE REPS

We love this bill but there’s so much more potential with automated curb enforcement! Other programs have already shown what's possible:

  • In Hoboken, their automated curb enforcement program cut parking violations by 66% and reduced blocked bike lanes by 59%.
  • Bus routes with automated bus lane enforcement here in NYC saw bus speeds increase 5%, collisions drop 20%, and emissions fall up to 10%.
