Open Plans: Transforming the streets of NYC to be truly livable

Dear [first-name],

Happy Regents Day to all who celebrate! And if you’re not taking the regents exam, here’s something worth celebrating too: this week 60+ school administrators and PTAs, open streets groups, community based organizations, and block associations from all five boroughs signed a letter calling on the administration and the City Council to allocate $20 million to the Open Streets for Schools (School Streets) program, and properly fund School Streets in the budget so that every child and family has safe and joyful spaces outside their schools.

Streets outside schools experience 57% more crashes and 25% more injuries than other city streets. Mayor Mamdani campaigned on fixing this, promising $20 million a year for School Streets. His proposed budget doesn't include it. Only 71 schools currently participate in the program, despite NYC having thousands of public, charter, and private schools. This letter is our community holding him to his word.

This request builds on our recent report, Schools Out in the Streets, that lays out tangible and actionable steps to fulfilling Mayor Mamdani's goal of school streets citywide.
