Open Plans: Transforming the streets of NYC to be truly livable

We’re still in the Dog Days of Summer – that period of intense heat that coincides with the rising of the Dog Star called Sirius. But, given that most of us don’t live by what the stars tell us anymore, we’ll take these warm days as a sign to get outside and enjoy the longer days. What better way to do that than Summer Streets?!

DOT Commissioner Flynn told NY1 that DOT is asking β€œShould (Summer Streets) evolve? Should it be bigger? Should it look different?” The short answer is YES, please! If you have thoughts for the DOT, please take their excellent survey here.

In fact, this wildly popular program evolves every single year. At Open Plans, we asked New Yorkers what they think of the program and what they would do to improve it. The answers we received can be boiled down to some simple fixes (if you have other feedback for us, share here):

β˜€οΈŽ Longer hours - let’s allow folks to enjoy the fun from sun up to sun down

β˜€οΈŽ More days - how about Saturday AND Sunday? Just leave the barricades up!

β˜€οΈŽ Longer routes - how about the South Bronx to the Brooklyn Bridge?

β˜€οΈŽ Interconnected routes - think Brooklyn & Manhattan together or Manhattan & The Bronx

Our colleague Clarence Eckerson, Jr. of Streetfilms filmed the Queens Summer Streets event and heard from one New Yorker who asked the question: why not add Winter Streets?

Regardless of a few drawbacks (ugh, cop cars), Summer Streets remains one of the most popular and fun ways to experience car-free streets. We hope you get outside and enjoy!

Remaining Summer Streets:

β˜€οΈŽ Saturday, August 8th - Manhattan

β˜€οΈŽ Saturday, August 15th - Manhattan

β˜€οΈŽ Saturday, August 22nd - Brooklyn & the Bronx

Keep Summer Streets Growing! Tell Mayor Mamdani and NYCDOT to go further β€” longer hours, more weekends, and connected routes across all five boroughs:
