Working to Reclaim Public Space for the Public Good on the UWS

Some Streetopia News

It's been a wonderful ride! 💛

After five fabulous years, I’ll be stepping away from StreetopiaUWS after Labor Day.

I’m incredibly proud of the work we accomplished—from our crowd-sourced micromobility deep dive, to our seminal vision for a reimagined West 72nd Street, to our role in spearheading NYC’s trash containerization program, and so much more.

StreetopiaUWS’s work has never been more relevant, and the time has never felt more promising to realize the kinds of people-first change to our streets and public spaces that can make the Upper West Side a model for what a livable neighborhood can be.

That’s where my colleague and new(ish) StreetopiaUWS Community Organizer Andrea Fondulas comes in! She’ll be taking the reins of this important work, and I’m really excited about what lies ahead for Streetopia and for the Upper West Side.

Speaking of…drop by our StreetopiaUWS Meet & Greet tomorrow, Saturday 9/5, from 12-2pm at Amity Hall on the Amsterdam Avenue Open Street (between 108th & 109th), co-hosted with our friends at the Columbus-Amsterdam Business Improvement District. You’ll have a chance to chat with Andrea (and me) and mingle with other like-minded Upper West Siders. RSVP at this link, or just swing by.

And if you just can’t get enough of StreetopiaUWS, we’ll also be tabling at the West Side County Fair on Pier I in Riverside Park this Sunday 9/6, from 1-6pm, so come on over and say hello.

Hope to see you at one of this weekend’s events. And thank you, as ever, for supporting this work.

Gratefully,

Carl Mahaney

Director of StreetopiaUWS
